The Book Adaptation Tag

I'm pretty sure The Book Nut created this tag, so go check out that post if you're interested. I'm currently in a bit of a rut. I haven't been doing a lot of book reviews lately but that is because I haven't been reading books I've felt the need to review. So I guess bear with me throughout my journey of making lists and doing tags. But if you enjoy these over reviews then I guess it's a win-win.

1. What is the last book adaptation movie you saw?

This one was so hard cause I have not been watching a lot of movies. If we were including TV I did watch part of the first episode of Shadow and Bone before I gave up on it if that counts. I really can't think of a movie so I will have to stick with that. 

2. What book movie are you most excited for?

The Night Circus. I found out they were making this book into a movie and I just hope they can capture the magic on screen. This book was so magical and I want them to get it right. This book holds such a special place in my heart and I want the movie to be perfect.

3. Which upcoming book movie will you definitely NOT see?

All of them? Can I say that? I'm probably not watching any of them. I'm a bit tired of book to movie adaptations. I want original content. If I have to choose though I'd probably go with Dune. I know everyone is so excited about it, but I've never read the book. I don't think I'll watch the movie. I know Zendaya's in it and I love her, but I just don't think she is enough to make me watch that movie. Also, I'm pretty sure it's sci-fi. I don't care for sci-fi. I haven't even seen Starwars.

4. Which book movie would you NEVER watch again?

Jane Eyre. They just sucked the life out of her. I loved the book so much because I loved Jane. The issue is that a lot of Jane's character-building happens in her head. There isn't a ton of dialogue in the book. We get to know and understand Jane through the story she is telling us and there is none of that in the movie. They didn't even try to do a voice-over or anything. Like you got no sense of her personality, there was no connection to her. Also Mr. Rochester was supposed to be ugly. He was not. 

5. Is there a movie you saw that made you want to read the book if you hadn’t yet?

Pride and Prejudice. I was just not interested in classics at that point. I watched Pride and Prejudice 2005 because I think I was just writing in my journal and the movie had just started so I figured why not. I ended up really enjoying it and decided to actually read the book. I can't say I regret it.

6. Conversely, is there a movie that made you never want to read the book?

Girl, Interrupted. I enjoyed the movie simply because of Angelina Jolie, but the movie itself was not very good. I have no intentions of ever reading that book because the main character is a drag. Unless I have to read it for a class or something I am not reading that book.

7. Name an adaptation that has almost nothing to do with the book it’s supposedly based on.

The Princess and the Frog. Now stick with me here while I explain myself. So once upon a time, I read this book called the Frog Princess by E. D. Baker. I read this entire series and loved it and then I found out they were supposedly making a movie adaptation of it. The movie comes out. I watch it. Literally, the only thing that is the same in both is that the princess kisses the frog and turns into a frog. That's it. I'm thinking there was a producer or writer out there somewhere that read this, liked the idea, but then legally had to credit this book because that's where they got the idea. I love the book and the movie separately, but that movie was not an adaptation. I felt lied to. 

8. Have you ever left the theatre during a movie adaptation because it was so bad?

No, I can have fun watching a bad movie. The only time I've ever left a movie in theatres is when my friend and I went to see Joker and she got so sick that we left and I had to refund the tickets.

9. Do you prefer to watch the movie first or read the book first?

I mean I always prefer to read the book, but sometimes I'm full of shit and I'll watch the movie anyway. 

10. How do you feel about movie adaptations that age characters up? (ex. characters that are in middle school, but in the movies, they’re all 18)

Like I get that production studios do this because of child labour laws, but it pisses me off. I don't want to watch a movie about teenage Percy Jackson. I want to watch Percy Jackson with age-appropriate Percy Jackson. Is that too much to ask? The new show is probably one I will watch. 

11. Do you get angry when the actors don’t look like you thought the characters looked?

I mean it definitely takes me out of it a little bit, but usually, it depends on the book. Like one of my favourite books is Practical Magic and the movie characters look almost nothing like how they are in the books and I still loved both. It also really depends on their acting. If a character doesn't look right but definitely acts right then it doesn't matter. 

12. Is there a movie you liked better than its book?

The Princess Bride, but only by a little bit. The book gets a little convoluted and confusing. I like that the movie keeps it simple with the grandfather just reading the book. Also, that casting was so perfect. I honestly don't think they should try to remake that movie because it will never be as perfect as the original. The stars aligned for some of those castings. Like Andre the Giant was perfect. 

13. Name a book that you would love to see as a movie.

Wolfsong. It's an amazing book and has so much LGBTQ+ representation. There's just a little something for everyone. God and if T. J. Klune helped with the screenplay this could be one of the saddest but funniest romantic movies ever. Like I would kill for this to be a movie.

Have You Ever Regifted A Book That You’ve Been Given?

Lol no. However, I have gifted people with books that I bought myself and didn't want anymore. I did do this with their knowledge, it was more like "Oh you want to read that! I have a copy that I don't want any more" and then I either straight up gave it to them or added it onto a birthday or Christmas present or something. I wasn't being sneaky about it.

Have you ever said you’ve read a book when you haven’t?

Did you mean: University

I'm an English major. I don't have time to actually read all the books I'm assigned. Partially because I don't want to read those books and partially because I just don't have the time. 

Have you ever borrowed a book and not returned it?

Nada. I hate when people don't give me my books back so I make a point to always return the books I've borrowed from people no matter how long I've had them or how long it has been since I've seen them. 

Have you ever read a series out of order?

Sure, all the time. Nothing crazy, like high fantasy, but definitely romance. You know those book series' where all the books are about different characters so order doesn't really matter. All the time.

Have you ever spoiled a book for someone?

Lol funny story actually. Back in high school, I think it was the ninth grade maybe. In my friend group there were the few of us that loved reading and so we would talk about books all the time. My best friend at the time did not enjoy reading so anytime we could talk her into reading a book was a success. So we had just gotten her to read The Fault in Our Stars which we had all loved. Then whilst we were walking to our regular lunch hangout she was walking in front of me and a couple of our other friends and we were discussing TFIOS and my friend said something along the lines of "It was so sad when August dies" and sadly my best friend was close enough to hear this. She was sooooo pissed. She immediately stopped reading the book. She was so mad.

Have you ever doggy eared a book?

My first copies of Harry Potter are all dog ears and cracked spines. It pains me to open them.

Have you ever told someone you don’t own a book when you do?

I don't think I have. I might have just so I wouldn't have to lend them the book, but an instance is not coming to mind.

Have you ever told someone you haven’t read a book when you have?

Lmao Fifty Shades of Grey. There is no way I'm admitting to people in real life that I've read Fifty Shades. There is no way. Especially considering I was like, eleven when I read it.

Have you every skipped a chapter or a section of a book?

If there is a particularly difficult scene for me to read in a book I will skip over it. I feel no shame over this. Sometimes these parts just make me too uncomfortable, even go so far as to make me nauseous and I'm not a masochist so I skip over them. I also just did this with Breaking Dawn because I didn't actually want to read it but I kinda wanted to know how it ended. I did not read any of the first two parts of it.

Have you ever bad mouthed a book you actually liked?

I feel like I definitely have. One is not immediately coming to mind but I know deep in my soul that I have in fact done this.

The Mid Year Freak Out Book Tag

Since I see absolutely everyone doing this tag, I guess I’ll do it too. I will link the two creators here and here. 

Now that I am finally on Summer Vacation I promise I will actually have more content up for you guys. My next post will either be my June Wrap Up because I actually have one for June, or it'll be a Top 5 Wednesday. Pinky Swear.

1 - THE BEST BOOK YOU'VE READ SO FAR IN 2018

Wolfsong by T. J. Klune. I can’t even describe how much I loved this book. It's full of magic and emotion and it's extremely gay and I love it.

2 - YOUR FAVOURITE SEQUEL THIS YEAR

Leah on the Offbeat was by far the best I’ve read this year. I mean there are some others that are pretty good but this was my favorite.

3 - A NEW RELEASE THAT YOU HAVEN'T READ BUT YOU REALLY WANT TO

A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J Maas. I preordered this book, it came in the mail, I read the first five pages, then I put it down and started reading other books.

4 - MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR

This is a three-way tie between the Darkest Star by Jennifer L Armentrout, Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas, and Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare. I have all three preordered and I want them all in my hands right this minute.

5 - YOUR BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT 

Burn Before Reading Sara Wolf. Sara Wolf is one of my favorite authors and I expected so much more from this book. It just fell very flat for me.

6 - BIGGEST SURPRISE OF THE YEAR

Lover Enshrined by J. R. Ward. I put off reading this book for years and then I read it and loved it. I didn't expect much because when I looked at reviews the general consensus was that it wasn't as good as the others, but I wholeheartedly disagree.

7 - FAVOURITE NEW TO YOU OR DEBUT AUTHOR

Samantha Shannon. I read the Bone Season and fell in love. It was so well written and I can't wait to read the next installment.

8 - YOUR NEW FICTIONAL CRUSH

This was so hard because the older I get the harder it is for my book boyfriends to win me over. That's why I talk about all the same ones over and over again. However, if I had to choose one it would be Audric from Furyborn. I don't know what it is about him, but I feel like he's very Gryffindor and he's actually good and perfectly combats Rielle's anger.

9 - NEW FAVOURITE CHARACTER

Rielle from Furyborn. I tried my best to not have any books repeating, but I honestly had to choose Rielle because although I know her future and what she does, I can't help but relate with her more than any of the other characters.

10 - A BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

It Ends With Us because this was such a heartwrenching book. This is one of those books you have to go in knowing nothing about. Don't read the reviews, don't look at the tags, don't read any comments, just go out and read it.

11 - A BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

Last Summer of the Garrett Girls, it was just such a short fun book about four sisters. I myself have a sister and I can say that I made a connection with it because it did remind me of my sister.

12 - YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK TO MOVIE ADAPTATION THAT YOU'VE SEEN THIS YEAR

Love, Simon because even though it wasn’t a perfect adaptation to the book it was still pretty fucking good and it meant so much to so many people so I could never say a bad thing about it.

13 - FAVOURITE BLOG POST YOU'VE PUBLISHED THIS YEAR

After perusing my blog posts I decided on a book tag that I created called The End book tag. I just had such a good time creating it and I was so proud of myself because I had never seen anything like it that I know of. The post itself didn't do as well as I had hoped but I had a fun time making it.

14 - THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU HAVE BOUGHT/RECEIVED THIS YEAR

The Cruel Prince because wow. If you take off the dust jacket there is the most beautiful imprint on the book.

15 - WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BOOKS THAT YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR?

Honestly, just look at question 4. Those are the books I for sure need to read this year. Plus It by Stephen King.

The End Book Tag (Original)

I was at my volunteer job working away and for some reason whenever I'm there I think about The Bourbon Thief by Tiffany Reisz, specifically the ending. I don't know why it is that I always think of that book while I'm there, just that I do. Today I just had the best idea for a book tag. Naming the different types of book endings and choosing a book for that specific ending. I should probably give you a bit of a spoiler warning because even though I'm not actually getting into what happens I am giving away the type of ending the book has. So if you're very sensitive to spoilers I would suggest not reading this one.

The WTF Ending - A book that made you scratch your head 

The Catastrophic History of You and Me. I'm honestly still confused by what happened at the end of the book. I really don't understand what happened. If anyone would like to explain it to me please do.

The Cliffhanger - A book that left you on the edge

Darken the Stars. The worst part about this cliffhanger is that this is the last book in the series. At least with every other book that has a cliffhanger, you get some reprieve when you get to the next book. BUT THERE IS NO NEXT BOOK WITH THIS ONE WTFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!

The Sad - A book that left you in a puddle of tears

A Dog's Purpose. This book is the reason I'm no longer allowed to read books about animals. I get way too invested and I cried the entire time I was reading it and the ending was just too much for me. I was on the verge of having a mental breakdown.

The Epic Ending - An ending to a book that absolutely blew your mind

A Court of Mist and Fury. Do I even need to say it? Everyone who has read ACOMAF knows just how epic that ending was. Sarah J. Maas has written a million amazing endings to her novels, but this is by far the best one yet. 

The Happy End - A book that gave you the warm and fuzzies when it was over

Cracked Kingdom. This book ended off with the cutest epilogue ever. So many ends are tied up and there are things that left for the reader to imagine. I find it funny that this has a happily ever after considering the entire series is about Royals.

The Epiphany Ending - A book that made you look at the world differently when you finished it

I'll Give You The Sun. This book made me realize that no matter how bad things get, it'll get better. The sun will end up shining and you're going to be happy again.

The Triumphant End - A book that made you think "hell yeah" when you finished it

Ignite Me was a rollercoaster ride. The ending was so incredibly badass. The entire book was pretty badass, but the ending really took the prize. I honestly think the author could have ended the series at that point perfectly, however, I'm still happy she decided to continue the series.

The Bittersweet End - An Ending that was both happy and sad

The Bourbon Thief was the reason I made this post so it seems only fair that I include it here. The Bourbon Thief has a very bittersweet ending, justice is served, but there are also some pretty sad things that we find out about the current day. I won't get into the details cause I actually really want you guys to read this book for yourselves. Just know that for every sad moment is another happier moment to counteract it.

I always feel like the team captain choosing players in gym class whenever I do a tag because I don't want to leave anyone out. I don't like picking favorites, therefore, anyone who wants to do the tag can do so.

Bookish Academy Awards Book Tag

I saw Regan of Peruse Project do this tag on Youtube and I thought it was such a fun idea that I wanted to do it too. All the books I'm using are from 2017, and I hope to start doing this tag every year. This was really fun for me to do and I hope you guys enjoy it! I will link the original creator here. 

Best Actor: Best Male Protagonist

My pick would have to be Noah Shaw. He is the perfect combination of cocky asshole and compassionate dreamboat. 

Best Actress: Best Female Protagonist

After much debate, I finally settled on Banks from Hideaway by Penelope Douglas. Banks is everything I love in a female character. She doesn’t take peoples shit, she’s hella smart, and she’s independent. 

Best Cinematography: Best Plot Twist

Scandal Never Sleeps. From the title, you can probably tell that the novel is gonna have a ton of twists and turns. Spoiler Alert it does. Because I don’t actually want to spoil this entire thing for you guys I will just say that the protagonist isn’t who we think she is, she isn’t who she thinks she is. 

Best Costume Design: Best Book Cover

The Castaways by Jessika Fleck has one of the most beautiful covers I’ve ever seen. That’s what initially drew me to it. The combination of the vibrant colors and the design are 10/10.

Best Supporting Actor and Actress: Best Male and Female Sidekick

Pasha from the Crown’s Game is such a sweetheart. He makes some bad decisions but I honestly can’t even hate him for it because he hates himself for it. He’s one of the most genuine characters I’ve ever read about.

Best Original Screenplay: Most Unique Plot/World

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. So obviously Neil Gaiman didn’t makeup Norse mythology, but the way he wrote it and portrayed all of it was amazing. I personally loved it.

Best Adapted Screenplay: Best Book-to-Movie Adaptation

I finally read the Princess Bride in 2017 and I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that this book has one of the best adaptations of all time. There are many verbatim conversations from the book in the movie.

Best Animated Feature: A book that would work well in animated format

The Bone Witch, I think it would work way better animated than it would CGI. The thing with animation is there is so much more you can do when you have people drawing the images instead of having actual people trying to act them out. 

Best Director: A writer you discovered for the first time

The author of Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens agenda. This was actually the last book I read in 2017 and I’m so freaking excited to read more of her books.

Best Visual Effects: Best action in a book

Lord of Shadows is by far the best book Cassandra Clare has come out with. All her books are amazing, but with each release comes an even better novel with more high-quality actions sequences. This was not a hard choice.

Best Short Film: Best novella or short book

The Summer Palace by C. S. Pacat. It’s basically the epilogue we all wanted for the Captive Prince Series. This takes place after the contents of Kings Rising. It’s only maybe 30 pages long, but it’s enough for us all to know that everything is going to be okay, plus some other fun things. 

Best Picture: Best standalone

The One Memory of Flora Banks. I kind of wish it wasn’t a standalone because I want to know what happens with everything, there could definitely be more story there. However, this story stands amazingly on its own.

Best Documentary: Best Historical Fiction or Non-fiction

I read one nonfiction novel in 2017 and I just so happened to have loved that book. The novel I am talking about is Night by Elie Wiesel. It’s about a man and his survival of the holocaust. It’s just as heartbreaking as you think it is. I would highly recommend giving this one a read.
