All Your Perfects Review

All Your Perfects
All Your Perfects
by Colleen Hoover

Synopsis:

Colleen Hoover delivers a tour de force novel about a troubled marriage and the one old forgotten promise that might be able to save it.

Quinn and Graham’s perfect love is threatened by their imperfect marriage. The memories, mistakes, and secrets that they have built up over the years are now tearing them apart. The one thing that could save them might also be the very thing that pushes their marriage beyond the point of repair.

All Your Perfects is a profound novel about a damaged couple whose potential future hinges on promises made in the past. This is a heartbreaking page-turner that asks: Can a resounding love with a perfect beginning survive a lifetime between two imperfect people?

My Thoughts:

SPOILERS

I gave this book 2.5 stars. I feel like everyone is going to disagree with me on this one. I might even get a bit of hate for it because everyone on Goodreads seems to love this book. I don't know if I'm going to post this on there. Don't get me wrong, I love Colleen Hoover, she's one of my favourite authors, but this book was just a disappointment. I really loved all of the before chapters. The before chapters, for the most part, made me not hate the main characters as much as I would have if I had only read the after parts. I have some very strong feelings about this book. I’m going to go into some of these in detail.

Starting with Quinn. Quinn is one of the protagonists of this novel. She and her husband Graham have been having fertility issues for years and it’s taking its toll on their marriage. Now I get fertility issues are fucking hard for a couple. I get that. I also get why it was so hard for them to adopt a child since this book takes place in the U.S. and if you have anything on your criminal record you’re pretty much fucked. But the way that Quinn acted at times, had me not liking her, then really disliking her, then hating her. I get that Quinn was probably depressed because of her inability to have a baby, but she was just so manipulative. She wanted a baby so bad that she was just manipulative and cruel towards her husband at times. There were just so many instances where just being in her head while she was only thinking about having children while having sex with her husband instead of actually wanting to have sex that made me so incredibly uncomfortable. Being depressed is not an excuse to manipulate the people that love you. I'm sorry, but it's not. It's not okay.

I think I might have actually hated Graham more than Quinn. It all started when he got upset with Quinn because you know, she was being manipulative. But then he punched a wall or door or something because he was mad at her. What that says to me, when someone punches something when they are mad at you is that they really want to punch you. Red flag. Like I get that your wife is being kind of manipulative because she wants a baby more than she wants you, but punching doors or walls isn’t going to solve that. It’s also scary. I don’t think I’d want to be with him.

The next nail in the coffin was when Graham cheated on Quinn. The reason these two met in the first place was because their significant others were cheating on them with each other. So that makes the fact that Graham cheated that much worse. He knew how much it hurt when that happened and he knew how much that hurt Quinn but he did it anyway. I know he didn’t sleep with the other woman, but he still emotionally cheated on her and he still made out with this other woman several times. So many levels of fucked up.

Another thing that really pissed me off about Graham was just a little comment he made in the before portion of the book. Politics are a very tricky thing. Politics is something that a lot of people have very strong opinions about, myself included, so when they were talking about them I mostly agreed with what they said. What pissed me off was when Graham said that he believed that women should be allowed to get abortions if they want them, except for in the third trimester. Now bear with me, people who carry their children to the third term, planned on having the baby. The only reason someone would get an abortion in the third trimester is because of health reasons. Either the baby is not going to live or the mother is having health complications and she isn’t going to live if she keeps carrying that baby. No one just wakes up one day deciding that they don’t want the baby they’ve been carrying for all those months. And if for some reason they do, that’s infanticide. It’s already illegal. I could keep going, but I think at this point of said the most important things so I’m going to stop. This comment by Graham just made me resent him.

What I hated most was that these two didn’t communicate with each other. This book was like a “what not to do” in a marriage. They each had so many issues that they didn’t talk to each other about. This could have been avoided if they talked to each other.

I feel like after dumping on this book so much I should talk about what I did enjoy about this book. I love Colleen Hoover’s sense of humour. When this book wasn’t depressing it was hilarious. I loved the story of how Quinn and Graham got together in the first place. It was just so heartwarming. And despite all the shit I hated in the middle, I felt like the ending was perfect. It was just such a simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming moment when reading their letters to each other. And coming to terms with their marriage and the fact that they would probably never have their own biological children, but being okay with it. I know some people want to have children are unable to. I understand it’s hard but I also appreciate that this book spread the message that having children is not the end all be all of your existence. Being able to have children is not what determines your self-worth. I also liked the point it put across about NOT FUCKING ASKING PEOPLE WHEN THEY’RE GOING TO HAVE A KID! DON’T DO IT!

I sat on this book for a few weeks, not thinking I was going to actually write a review for it. It got to the point where I knew if I didn’t write a review it was going to drive me crazy. I keep thinking about it and why it annoys me. Hopefully, now my thoughts will move on to other things.

My Decade in Books

I was going to publish this last week but I got distracted and forgot that I was writing this post. I watched PeruseProjects video on her favourite YA novels of the last decade and I really liked the idea. I decided to make my own list, however, it won't be confined to YA. Also, while she had hers set by publication year, I'm just going by the book that influenced that year the most for me. If you're interested in watching the PeruseProject video here is a link.

2010: Mr. Popper’s Penguins

One of the favourites I really don't talk about it a lot. I read this back in the fourth grade when I still hated reading. I remember my teacher, who tried her best to get me into reading, asked me what I was interested in. I told her I love animals. She pulled out this old ass book with a man and a whole bunch of penguins on the cover and told me to try reading that one. She got me there. I devoured that book and it remained this high that I tried to chase throughout the rest of the year. This book is just so integral to my past. If I had never read this book I probably would have still hated reading.

2011: Harry Potter

This was probably the most defining book series in my life. While I did read books here and there before this, I was never too invested in reading a lot. I would read books here and there and wasn't too mad about it, but it wasn't exactly my number one priority. Harry Potter made reading my number one priority. I legit only read it because everyone else in my class was reading it and I felt left out. And then I read it really quickly because I was competitive and wanted to read it faster than my best friend. (I was a little asshole).

2012: The Vampire Academy

I read this summer after sixth grade and all I did was read this series. This remains one of my favourite series' of all time. That summer I did so much fun stuff, I went to New York to visit family, I went to Ontario to visit family, and the entire time I literally just read this series. I was literally in New York, one of the coolest cities in the U.S. and I literally made my family go with me to the book store so I could pick up the next book because I had to keep reading. This series was A1.

2013: The Hunger Games

Like Harry Potter, I literally just read this because my entire class was reading it. At the time I thought it was good but possibly a little overrated. As time goes on I like the story more and more. I feel like it's really died out within the last few years, but the Hunger Games was one of the best YA trilogies I've ever read. It had such an important message and was so well written. Plus it was just such a good story. I want to do a reread.

2014: The Outsiders

My sister tried to get me to read this but I refused but then I had to read it in eighth grade English class. I question why I never listened to my sister. Basically the day we started this in class, we just read two chapters right there in class and I thought it was pretty good. Then our homework that night was to read two more chapters, so I read the whole book. The Outsiders is such a perfect book and it amazes me that a fifteen-year-old girl wrote this story. This book is everything. if you've never read the Outsiders I would highly suggest it. This book is a classic. And one of the good classics. It's not some shit written by a dead white guy.

2015: Throne of Glass / I’ll Give You the Sun

I was trying to choose between these two for 2015 and I just couldn't do it. Both of these are just so important to me in different ways. Throne of Glass is one of my all-time favourite YA book series'. When it ended I didn't know what to do with myself. Everything about the Throne of Glass world was so new and exciting and exhilarating. Now, I'll Give You the Sun is one of my favourite books of all time. This book was so perfect in so many ways. I don't really want to give anything away about it plot-wise because I think it should be read with an element of surprise, but I will say it's sad but left me with the biggest smile on my face when it was over.

2016: Tales From the Shadowhunter Academy

I was looking through the books had read in 2016 and while I liked a lot of them, none of them made me quite as excited and giddy as this one did when I saw it on the list. I knew that I needed to have one of Cassandra Clare's books on here, but I'm actually kind of surprised with myself that it was this one. There was just so much love and nostalgia when I read this book. We saw old characters and we met new characters and it was the most perfect companion novel that I've ever read.

2017: The Night Circus

You guys know how much I love a little magic. This book had a good blend of that little bit of magic. The entire atmosphere of this book is so hard to describe. It was ethereal, it was mystical, it was all types of amazing. Erin Morgenstern knows how to write good characters. I loved all of them. It was so hard to hate any of the characters she wanted you to love.

2018: Wolfsong

I read this book. Finished this book. Read this book again. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. This book was my favourite of 2018 by a landslide. Nothing else compared. I just loved the way it was written. I loved that there was this perfect balance of humour and happiness against this backdrop of violence and sadness. T. J. Klune is so good nad messing with your emotions and getting you to feel exactly what he wants you to. I can't remember but I think this book made me cry.

2019: Without Merit

I think this dethroned Hopeless as my favourite Colleen Hoover book. I didn't think that was ever going to happen because I looooooved hopeless for so long. Like I can't even count how many times I've reread Hopeless. Without Merit just struck a chord in me that Hopeless could never get to.

Top 10 Most Anticipated Releases of 2020

These are in no particular order as I'm pretty fucking excited about all of them. Sadly, there are some that did not make them on this list. There are probably so many that I missed because there are just so many good books coming out this year, just know that these were the first on my mind when making this list.

1. Brothersong

I already preordered the paperback of this one. I’m so ready to read it. This is the final book and the one I’ve been waiting for for what seems like decades. It’s only been a couple of years, but still. That's way too long to have to wait for Carter’s story. I love Carter.

2. Nightfall by Penelope Douglas

My mind is running wild with all the possibilities of this last book. I’m wondering how long it’s going to be or if there is a possibility of a fifth book because there is just so much to unpack. I’m also curious if Pen will finally do her Reverse Harem novel because I know she was originally gonna do that with Corrupt but then chickened out. Possibilities? Many.

3. Fall Boys by Penelope Douglas

There's no cover for this one yet so we'll just have to go without. I’ve been thinking non-stop about this series too. Penelope Douglas knows what her readers want. I’ve reread the three short stories she’s written about these guys about 10 billion times. This series can’t come out soon enough.

4. Feather

This book sounds so fun and sexy. The synopsis alone is enough to have me on the edge of my seat. This is going to be a good one. This book is actually set to be released next week, I ordered a copy and it has already been shipped. Very excited about this one.

5. Chain of Gold

I’ve been ready for this ever since we met some of the characters in Shadowhunter Academy. We’re getting more Will and Tessa, we’re getting new characters to love. I don’t even care that this book was pushed back from its original 2019 release date because that just means Cassandra Clare has more time to perfect it.

6. House of Earth and Blood

Honestly, don’t even remember what this one is about, just know it’s by Sarah J. Maas, so I know I’ll love it. Also, I looked it up, this is coming out on the same day as Chain of Gold. WTF, how am I supposed to choose which to read first. I say that, but honestly both of these are probably going to be sitting on my shelf for a while because I'm pretty sure I have a midterm that day.

7. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

I’m still a very big fan of The Hunger Games trilogy. I know it really died out after a few years, but I still think it’s one of the best dystopian series’ that I’ve ever read. I don’t know what this book specifically is going to be about other than the fact that it’s about the 10th Hunger Games. I’m interested in what Suzanne Collins has in mind for us.

8. World of Throne of Glass

I honestly don’t know what’s going on with this book. I preordered it, but then I got an email saying it was cancelled, but then it was put back on the website then it was taken off again. I don’t know what’s happening so I’m crossing my fingers that this ends of happening this year. Now while looking at the book page on Goodreads it doesn't have a date on it. I'm just gonna put this book on this list and hope for the best.

9.  Credence

I know. I know. This is my third Penelope Douglas book on this list, but is it my fault that she writes good books? Is it my fault that she decided to release at least three of them this year? No. So I will be grateful and put them on my list. This is coming out in early January. AKA January 14th, AKA next week so mark your calendars. I really don't know a lot about this book and what it's about. I feel like it's going to be similar to Birthday Girl, but I'm not really sure.

10. The Prince and the Pawn

This one doesn’t actually have a release date but I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that it comes out in 2020. I need this book so bad because of the way things ended off in that last book. I think I might die if this doesn't come out sooner rather than later. Also, I didn't realize that there was a chance that Vaughn wasn't gonna be with Tyra until B. B. mentioned that they originally wasn't going to put them together. But I'm pretty sure they are actually going to. Unless I misread something along the lines. I'm pretty sure Tyra is the love interest. I really love Tyra so I'm excited to read this one.
