The Halloween Book Tag

I don't know if I've ever mentioned this but Halloween is my favourite day of the year. October is my favourite month of the year. It's like a whole month of Halloween. I haven't really gotten to enjoy Halloween as much the last couple of years since I've been so busy, but since everything is online for school this year and I'm not working that much I've been really gotten into everything this year. I bought two ceramic pumpkins. And one glass one. That was just a really long-winded way of me saying that I'm incredibly excited about Halloween this year and I'm really excited to do this tag. From what I have gathered this tag was created by Book Adventures, a blog that I don't think exists anymore. I found a blog called Book Adventures but I'm fairly sure it isn't the same blog. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Now onto the tag!

1.) Favourite Scary (Must Read) For Halloween?

The Shining. It's classic. It's the only book that has ever truly scared me.

2.) Scariest Book Cover, Like Ever?

It. Simply because I am afraid of clowns and I hate looking at them.

3.) If You Could Go Trick-or-Treating With Any Author, Who Would You Pick?

I really don't know how to answer this one because I really don't think I would want to go trick or treating with a stranger. That sounds kind of awkward to me. Maybe Penelope Douglas, I think she could make things interesting.

4.) If You Could Dress Up As Any Bookish Character For Halloween, Who Would You Be?

Beth Harmon from the Queens Gambit. I haven't read the book yet, but I did just watch the Limited series on Netflix and it was amazing. I would love to dress up like her. I loved her look.

5.) If You Could Find Anything (From Any Book) In Your Trick-or-Treat Stash, What Would You Hope To Find?

A time turner. I feel like I never have enough time to do things so I would love to be able to go back in time just so I could have more time to do things.

6.) In What Fictional World Would You Like To Go Trick-or-Treating?

Not to beat a dead horse, but the Wizarding World because they have so much cool shit. The second choice would be the Shadowhunter world. I'd probably end up with some Fairy edibles or something.

7.) What Book Villain Would You Not Like To Meet Alone In A Dark Alley On Halloween?

Robert Livingstone from the Green Creek series. That dude freaks me out. I'm just imagining this gross one-eyed creature that wants to rip my guts out. Terrifying.

8.) Would You Rather Dress Up As A Vampire, Zombie, Werewolf, or Shadowhunter?

I have done this several times already, but I love dressing up as a vampire. I have those fake fangs that are perfectly moulded to my teeth too. They give me a lisp but I love wearing them.

9.) Pick A Candy (Just One) From Harry Potter That You Would Love To Find In Your Stash?

Chocolate Frogs.  I always wanted to try those. They sounded and looked so good and would be really interesting to eat. Or just to have around.

Horror Movie Recommendations

I know this is a book blog, but I'm ready for Halloween. Here are some of my favourite horror movies because we are in spooky season.

Us

One of the best horror movies I have ever seen. While Get Out was also a really good horror film, I felt like Us was more of classic horror but remade better. It's a must-see.

It

As you may well know I am terrified of Clowns. So I really enjoyed these movies and thought they were a decent amount of scary. They also had really interesting subplots.

The Babysitter duology

These two movies are so fun to watch. They are bad but know that they are bad. I just had the best time watching these two movies. The humour was exceptional. They weren't trying to take themselves too seriously and I loved that. If you want to watch a horror movie that's more fun, I would highly recommend these two.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

Johnny Depp in this movie is a snack. Also, this is one of my favourite classic horror movies. It's got such a unique concept and the scary part of this movie is the characters' inability to actually escape.

Happy Death Day

This movie is on a similar wavelength as the Babysitter movies. It was something that didn't take itself too seriously. Would highly recommend this one.

Unsane

This movie was so horrible to watch because it could have happened to anyone. This is a movie about a woman who is put into a mental institute even though she doesn't need to be there. She needs to fend off her stalker that no one believes her about in the meantime. I believe it's also shot on an iPhone to make it feel more uncomfortable. If you're more into psychological horror this one is it.

Top 10 Favourite Authors Updated

I did a post about this about 3 years ago. I recently came across the post again and realized it was pretty out of date. Because of recent developments (AKA transphobia), I have had to boot J. K. Rowling from this list. I’m not even sorry about it. While I will always love Harry Potter, I don’t have to like her. It’s time for an updated favourite author's post.

10. T. J. Klune

His humour is unmatched. I do read his books for the stories, the romance, but more importantly, because he is so funny. Read the Lightning-Struck Heart. It is so long but so funny. The first time I read it I thought it was too long, but then I kept going back and rereading it. His book Wolfsong is one of my favourites of all time. Just one of my favourite authors, I would read anything he released.

9. Cora Reilly

Are her books the pinnacle of good writing? Not necessarily. Do I enjoy the fuck out of her books? Yes. She's one of those authors who I eagerly wait for release dates from. I will actually put release dates for some of her books on my calendar because I get so excited for them. She writes a really good morally grey character and as you may know, those are my favourite.

8. Jennifer L. Armentrout

While I do feel like I enjoy her books a little less than I did when I was 13, I still really love her books. I will continue reading them and I don't see that stopping. She always gives me plots and characters I love, and while the writing is a bit more juvenile, I don't think I will ever come to a point where I don't want to read her books anymore. She has a special place in my heart.

7. Amanda Bouchet

I have read 3 and a half books from her and I just know she is one of my favourite authors. If you are at that age where you no longer feel like you want to be reading about teenagers but you want something in a similar style to YA, her writing is probably for you. Her characters are generally in their twenties, her books have these great plots, great romances. I can't get enough of them. I read A Promise of Fire on a whim, I started it when I had a long break between classes and I read the entire thing in one sitting. It is one of my favourite books of all time and she is one of my favourite authors.

6. B. B. Reid

I've been reading her books for a few years now and if you've noticed I never miss a chance to be part of her blog tours. It means I get to read her books early and review them and gush about them. She is so good at writing romances I want to read. They always have a bit of an edge, they have these morally grey characters, and I can't get enough. I'm a sucker for romance novels, but especially the ones she writes.

5. Stephen King

I've been reading Stephen King books since I was 13. One of my probably unattainable life goals is to read every book and short story he has ever written. I can tell you right now, that will never happen. The man writes faster than I can read, plus he's had about 40 years of a head start on me. It won't stop me from trying though.

4. Colleen Hoover

You know. You know. This is a special case right here. I have to be in a very specific mood to read one of her books and when I am in that mood and read one of those books, they change me. These books make me view the world in a different way. Some good, some bad. Soon I plan on actually ranking her books from my least favourite to my favourites. I've been working on it, and I want it to be a good post. I can't rush perfection.

3. Penelope Douglas

I read everything this woman releases. My favourite series by far is her Devil's Night series. Before I liked her books, but this series right here made me love her books. I don't think I've ever loved a set of characters the way that I loved these characters. I loved every single one of those characters. Only pure talent could write characters I loved that much.

2. Sarah J Maas

I'm obsessed with her books. I think everyone may be obsessed with her books. She is the queen of high fantasy. I can't wait to see what she does in the future, I can't wait for the second part of her ACOTAR series. I am impatiently waiting.

1. Cassandra Clare

The way I've seen her writing improve over the years is astounding. This is a true case of someone who has taken advice and worked to improve her writing and it shows me how serious she is about her writing. She writes characters we love and characters that are on the fence and characters we absolutely hate. She ties in current events, she makes things interesting. Her books are the perfect package. I've never had so much respect for an author before.

Rant: Books That I Hated

So I've probably talked about most of these books on separate occasions, but I figured I would bring all of them together for you in one post. This isn't a top 10 or anything, this is just me calling out shit books that I hated. I'm just going on a full out SPOILER-FILLED rant. If you are not up for spoilers or rants, then this is not for you. Also, I'm not putting Twilight on this list because I've ranted about it so much in the past that I have nothing left to rant about. It isn't on here, not because I don't still hate it, but because I'm out of fuel.

Romeo and Juliet

I'm pretty sure in the archives of my blog I already have a full-on rant post about this play specifically, but I am going to reiterate. They were literal children. It was so overdramatic, these children could have broken up and gotten with other people and it wouldn't have been as big of a deal as it was made out to be. Juliet was literally thirteen. Do you remember what you were doing at thirteen? Yeah, not so great is it. Now imagine your thirteen-year-old self getting married and killing yourself over some guy you've known for not even three days. I have heard a rumour that this play was supposed to be satire. I can't confirm this. It would make me like the play more if it was in fact satire.

The Beginning of Everything

This book was like someone wrote a sentence that ended with "but" and then just never finished what they were saying. The only difference from the beginning of the book and the end is that Ezra learns a couple things about himself and his dog is now dead. WHAT KIND OF PSYCHOTIC AUTHOR KILLS OFF THE DOG?!?!?!? I don't think I will be reading any more of the author's works. I also really didn't like the way she treated her female characters. "To the left, we have our airhead slutty cheerleader and to the right, we have our manic pixie dream girl!"

Her Book Boyfriend

In a year of shitty reads, this one really stuck out to me. And don't worry, if you've already read about how much I hate this book, I do have an update because the author actually wrote a sequel to this that I didn't read. Then again, I didn't need to know that it would be shit. Recap: Our main character is such a quirky book lover and just wants the perfect "book boyfriend". Our protagonist has a male best friend who is a total slut. So she often breaks up with his girlfriends for him because apparently he can't do that himself and mind you this bitch is so rude about it. She is just such a catty ass bitch and she totally gets what's coming to her. When the book ends she "gets the guy". However, in the sequel, you don't even need to read the actual book to find out that two weeks after the end of Her Book Boyfriend, she gets cheated on. How do I know this without reading the book you ask? Well, it's literally in the synopsis. I shit you not. It literally makes the entirety of the first book pointless. If you want to read the synopsis for the second book here is a link to that. And if you want to read my full review for the first book here is a link to that too. And just to add some more heat, here is one of my favourite reviews ripping this book to shreds.

The Mighty Storm

Everyone and their mother is just fucking obsessed with this book. I have to say that I don't get it. I love the author's other works, she writes some of the funniest, sexiest romances I have ever read and yet this one just missed so hard. I have a strong aversion to books with cheaters. I can't read them. It's why I had a hard time reading The Vincent Boys, it's why I can't reread Thoughtless. It's just not my thing. It just pissed me off how much our lead character was willing to lead on her boyfriend. You could tell she cared about him, but apparently not enough to break up with him before she cheated. As the reader I could see her slipping away pretty early on and yet she doesn't seem to get it and thinks sleeping with him will make all of her feelings go away. It costs zero dollars to not cheat on your significant other and so I just could not sympathize with this protagonist even when she went through some serious shit at the end.

Dust City

This would be a good book. If you were a furry. All the furries out there, I have a YA romance that you're gonna fucking love. I don't really remember what happens because I blocked it from my mind because it probably scarred me, but you know, furry love stories are far and few between so you gotta get them when you can :/

Forever My Girl

OOOOOOO this one makes me so angry. I hated all the characters so much.

It was so fucked up that when Liam finally learns about his kid, this bitch Josie is like "Noah is gonna adopt him". That is so fucked. I didn't like Liam, but I still figured he deserved to have a chance to be a dad before Noah swooped in and stole his parental rights. I kind of hated Noah during this book and I feel as though that was unfair. It wasn't really him I hated as much as it was Josie. Like I get where she was coming from, she did try to contact Liam about being pregnant, but the way she dealt with it and her personality, in general, made me haaaaaate her. She was just so immature and just such a bitch about her child having a father. I would get it if Liam was abusive or knowingly left his child, but he didn't. He was just kind of a cry baby who didn't know what he wanted out of life.

The movie for this is up on Netflix and I'm trying to figure out if I actually want to watch it. Cause it can't possibly be as bad as the book, but I do still have doubts. Maybe one day when I'm bored as hell I'll watch it and figure out if I hate it as much as the book.

Daughter of Darkness

My friend told me about how disturbing this one was before I read it and I brushed it off because I had "read worse". So this book sat on my shelf for a few weeks, maybe months, I don't really remember. Anyway, one day I finally got to it and I just read it straight through. I wish I had never laid eyes on this book. Incest. So much incest. I can't even describe the incest levels to you, it was fucking through the roof. I felt so dirty after reading this, and not in a sexy way. More like I wanted to take a bath in a volcano in order to get the nastiness off of me.
