Spoiler Alert

Synopsis:

Nightfall

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Douglas comes the thrilling, final installment in the Devil’s Night series…

What happens when it's five against one and nowhere to run?

EMORY

They call it Blackchurch. A secluded mansion in a remote, undisclosed location where the wealthy and powerful send their misbehaving sons to cool off away from prying eyes.

Will Grayson has always been an animal, though. Reckless, wild, and someone who was never bound by a single rule other than to do exactly what he wanted. There was no way his grandfather was going risk him humiliating the family again.

Not that the last time was entirely his fault. He might’ve enjoyed backing me into corners in high school when no one was looking, so they wouldn’t catch on that Mr. Popular actually wanted a piece of that quiet, little nerd he loved to torture so much, but…

He could also be warm. And fierce in keeping me safe.

The truth is… He has a right to hate me.

It’s all my fault. Everything.

Devils Night. The videos. The arrests.

I’m to blame for all of it.

And I regret nothing.

WILL

I never minded being locked up. I learned a long time ago that being treated like an animal gives you permission to act like one. No one has ever looked at me any other way.

Their only mistake is believing anything I do is an accident. I can sit in this house with no Internet, television, liquor, or girls, but I’ll come out of here with something far more frightening to my enemies.

A plan.

And a new pack of wolves.

I just didn’t expect one of my enemies to come to me.

I don’t know who smuggled her in or if they meant to leave her here, but I can smell her hiding in the house. She’s here.

And as the security detail leaves the supplies, the gates close, and the door to my gilded cage opens, giving me free reign of the house and grounds for another unsupervised month, I remember with a smile…

Blackchurch houses five prisoners. I’m only one of her problems.

*Nightfall is a full-length, romantic suspense suitable for readers 18+. It’s necessary to read the prior installments in the series before starting this story.

My Thoughts:

I gave this book 5 stars. This book was the perfect ending. Or possibly perfect beginning to something else *wink*.

This book raised certain questions that they didn’t necessarily answer and I would really like some answers. I, unfortunately, didn’t write them all down, but I hope they do get answered nonetheless.

This was a pretty long book. I didn’t feel like I was reading a very long book, however. While there are a lot of pages, they are all packed full of interesting information. I actually read this in under 24 hours. I didn’t even skim read or try to speed through it, which I have to admit I do find myself doing sometimes. I really took my time with this one and luckily I had the day off to do so. It didn’t really hit me until I finished that this series was actually over. I really do hope she ends up doing some sort of spinoff because I feel like there is definitely more to the story here. Also, I’m really going to miss these characters I’ve been reading about for five years. I need them in my life.

My one big question going into this book was: will Alex finally get her threesome? All I’m going to say is that I was pretty happy with the way her character arc played out. I was kinda sad we never got a little chapter from her point of view near the end. Fingers crossed that maybe Pen will decide to throw us a bone and write one;)

Emory is probably my favourite female protagonist right after Banks. Banks will forever and always be my number one bitch because I relate to her, but Emmy is in a close second because I could definitely relate to her a lot too. For one thing, no fucks given from the get-go, extremely antisocial, listens to music to avoid human interaction. My type of girl. When she said she hates classics because they bore her, I felt that. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I don’t read a lot of classics. I only read the ones that interest me. That’s not a lot of them. I feel like I definitely liked her a lot more in the beginning though. She was a lot more lifeless in the present than she was in the flashbacks. I think she really picked back up a lot of those parts of herself, but there was quite a big chunk of that book where she hadn’t.

As for the relationship between Emmy and Will, I fucking loved it. I think they were a really good pair. If you guys have ever read the Fall Away series, these two really reminded me of Madoc and Fallon. Emory and Will are them but darker. Emory and Will are a couple that we’ve been hearing about since the very first book. I always knew they were going to be endgame. These two have been hinted at too much in the other three books to ever been thrown aside. I loved how we got so many flashbacks to really add to the beginning of their relationship. Their relationship did start in those flashbacks, they went on dates, they had sexy times, they had heartbreaks. I felt like I got everything that I was waiting for when it came to them. I finally got an explanation for all of that.

I also really enjoyed the little story of Reverie and Edward. It was such a cool little urban legend to sprinkle in. Which, makes me think of the one question that I do remember having that was never answered. In the end, it’s revealed that Will’s grandfather, you know, the Senator, was best friends with Edward. There’s this huge hint about finding out what really happened between those two and then there was no follow-through! Emmy’s like “Oh the unsolved mystery can wait till tomorrow to be answered!” and then we skip forward a few months! Excuse me? I really hope this is because it’ll be important in a later book or short story or something. I can’t be left hanging like that, especially since this is the last book.

Damon is still my favourite character. Every moment with him was just a highlight. I loved his unlikely friendship with Emmy. I just loved their little moments together, when they talked, joked, worked together, buried Damon’s mother alive, etc. Chef’s kiss. The fact that they had this little bonding experience made me so happy and I can’t really explain why. I feel like it had a lot to do with how Damon doesn’t have any close female persons in his life that he isn’t related to or boning. And Emory doesn’t really have friends period. It was really nice seeing that throughout the yeas even though they weren’t necessarily friends, Emmy did have an ally in one of the horsemen. I don’t know, I just treasure that friendship.

Overall, this book had some pretty dark overtones, but it just had these lighthearted funny moments that occasionally appeared to bring us out from under the darkness that was Nightfall. I especially loved the part where Damon punches all three of his friends for reasons I won’t mention here;) One of my favourite parts of the book. This book just cemented my love for Damon.

I didn’t realize I had room in my heart for these new characters but I do<3 I’m really interested in Rory. I know Damon is one kill away from serial killer status but Rory actually has serial killer status and I find him very interesting. He didn’t get a very high word count and I would like to know more about him. You can’t just sprinkle in these new interesting characters in the last book. Come on.

Speaking of interesting characters, Athos. Athos I feel is definitely getting a book. That little epilogue cliffhanger situation begs to be another book. I have so many questions about Athos and where she’s from and how she came to the Cove. She also already has a potential love interest and I really want to see how that plays out.

Okay this is long and I’m almost done, but I just have to mention I’m so happy about the train. This is a very little known fact about me, I don’t think I’ve even mentioned it to my best friends because it’s never really been relevant, but I love trains. I think they were so cool and fun. I would love to ride in one. I would love to go on a train trip. I would love to solve a murder mystery on one. I just really like trains and I don’t know why, but I really loved that part of this book takes place on a train.

Also at the back of the book, the characters' full names and birthdays were listed and so I got bored and rearranged them from oldest to youngest, which hopefully I got right as long as characters that were the same age were actually born in the same year. Enjoy:

  1. Hi! Love the review, just wanted to chime in to say that Damon’s mother was not buried alive, though it would’ve been delicious if she had been. Damon strangled her before they buried her.
